The PhD Programme  Structure and Student Progression

 

The PhD programme is full-time only and it is organised in two phases, the first phase is a 1 year long taught phase which prepares the candidates for the subsequent research phase. The minimum registration time for the programme is 3 years, and the maximum time is 6 years.

Phase of original and independent research

 

The initial application is evaluated by the Doctorate Board and accepted or rejected. The decision is communicated to the applicant forthwith.

 

The student will outline his/her research proposal and submit it as part of the application. The Doctorate Board will evaluate this as a preliminary proposal and appoint a supervisor. The Board may change the proposal so that it fits the available supervision profile.

 

Upon acceptance, the applicant registers as a PhD student at AASTMT. He/she commences the taught phase of the programme at the autumn semester with the in order to sit the examination diet at the end of each semester. In the case of failing any of the examinations, the student may re-sit the relevant examinations at the next semester's normal examination diet. It is not possible to re-sit more than once.

 

The research phase can only commence for students who have passed all examination relevant to the teaching phase of the programme. Once the research phase starts, the student and the supervisor(s) compile the detailed research proposal and plan and submit this to the Doctorate Board. The Board will set time limits so that the student may commence the actual research within 1 month of the start of the semester.

 

The objective of the research phase is the completion of a piece of original independent research and the compilation of the thesis and defence of the work. The student will be guided by the supervisor(s) according to the existing rules and regulations.
